Outgoing California Gov. Gavin Newsom has put his Sacramento-area mansion on the market for $7.5 million as he prepares to end his two-term run—amid rumors that he is set to launch a presidential campaign ahead of the 2028 election.
Newsom, 58, and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, 52, purchased the seven-bedroom Santa Barbara-inspired property for $3.7 million in 2019, explaining at the time that they chosen the Fair Oaks dwelling as their family abode because it was a "more kid-friendly" alternative to the official governor's mansion.
Certainly the mansion—which was built in 1984—offers more luxury than the Victorian property earmarked for the governor's use, boasting a number of very high-end amenities, including a resort-style pool, a private tennis court, a cold plunge pool, and a 5,000-bottle wine cellar with its own tasting room.
Described in its listing, which is held by Matthew Hindy of Nick Sadek Sotheby's International Realty, as an "extraordinary showcase of Santa Barbara-inspired architecture," the 12,600-square-foot property sits on 8.2 acres of elegantly manicured land that offers "sweeping views and exceptional privacy."
"Privately gated and exceptionally secluded, this once-in-a-generation estate seamlessly blends timeless architecture, expansive grounds, resort-caliber amenities, and breathtaking views to deliver an unmatched California lifestyle," the description goes on.

They explained that they had chosen the Fair Oaks dwelling as their family abode because it was a "more kid-friendly" alternative to the official governor's mansion. Elections are due to be held in California on Nov. 3 and will see Democrat Xavier Becerra in the running against Republican Steve Hilton. Newsom was not eligible to run for reelection, having already served two terms, the maximum allowed under California law.
However, Newsom is widely expected to pivot to the national stage after ending his run as governor, with many predicting that he is in the midst of planning a presidential campaign—speculation that will no doubt be fueled by his decision to part ways with his California home.
The politician has spent much of the last seven years residing in the property with his wife and their four children, Montana, 16, Hunter, 14, Brooklynn, 13, and Dutch, 10; however, the family is understood to have relocated to Marin County in 2024, when Newsom and his wife purchased a new $9 million home in the Bay Area.
In June of that year, Politico reported that the Newsoms had enrolled their children in schools in Marin County, and would be splitting their time between their new dwelling and their Fair Oaks property for the remainder of his gubernatorial term.
Speaking to SF Gate, Newsom's spokesperson, Izzy Gardo, explained that the couple's decision to list their Sacramento-area home was part of a "gradual transition" being made by the family ahead of his stepping down as governor at the start of 2027.
"With the Governor’s term ending in January 2027, the family began a gradual transition in 2024, purchasing a home in Marin County to provide continuity for their children’s education," Gardo explained. "The sale of their Sacramento home is the next step in that transition."

It is not immediately clear what updates or changes the Newsoms may have made to their property in the seven years they have owned it, however listing images indicate that they have largely vacated the residence, with just a few personal items left remaining.
Should the Newsoms manage to secure their full asking price for the property, which is listed for more than double what they bought it for, they will walk away with a very pretty profit, save for any money they have invested in the dwelling since 2019.
Listing images suggest that the home has undergone several upgrades since it was built, however the bright, open spaces appear much the same they did when it was built.
The home features several very spacious living areas on the main floor, including a sizable kitchen, complete with a large center island, a formal living room with vaulted ceilings, exposed wooden beams, and a large fireplace, and a more relaxed TV room.
Tiled floors run throughout the main floor of the property—while a lower level is home to the wine cellar, which boasts stone walls and what appears to be temperature-controlled storage for the bottles.
The primary suite offers an incredible array of features, including an "expansive" bathroom with an enormous soaking tub, as well as two walk-in closets, and a private outdoor pool, cold plunge, and hot tub that help to create "a personal wellness oasis."
Upstairs, additional bedrooms can be found, along with separate entertaining areas, including a loft-style space with ample bookshelves, and a funky hammock chair that is hung from the ceiling.

While Newsom has not yet announced his official presidential bid, he has widely hinted at his plans to run, most recently stating during an interview on "Detroit Talk City" that it would be for the people to decide whether they consider him good enough to serve in the role.
"That’s a, that’s a difficult question to answer," he responded when asked if he thought he would be a good president.
"I have no idea. I would like to think I would be, but that’s for others to determine. I think I was a pretty good mayor. I think I was pretty good, but people have different opinions, and so I’m not naive about it."
Towards the end of 2025, he admitted to CBS News that he would "be lying" if he said he wasn't considering a presidential campaign—although he stopped short of confirming his plans to run.
Newsom is currently viewed as being one of the top Democratic contenders for a presidential bid, alongside former Vice President Kamala Harris, former transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg, and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
