Robert De Niro’s Multimillion-Dollar Property Portfolio Features an Inherited Hamptons Retreat—and a Private Ski Slope Estate

The star has owned properties in some of the country’s most coveted enclaves, from New York City to an estate in the Hudson Valley.

Robert De Niro has spent more than five decades building one of Hollywood’s most celebrated careers—and an incredibly unique property portfolio, one that revolves heavily around his hometown of New York.

The "Taxi Driver" star, who was born and raised in Manhattan, where he lived primarily in the Little Italy neighborhood, has since expanded his property footprint well beyond the confines of the city.

The 83-year-old, who has seven children, including his youngest daughter, Gia, 3, whom he shares with girlfriend Tiffany Chen, travels all over the world for his work; but when it comes to his home life, De Niro splits it primarily between two residences: a sprawling beachfront Hamptons house and an enormous estate in upstate New York.

However, over the years, De Niro, who has an estimated net worth of $500 million, has dabbled in international real estate investment, snapping up an impressive property in London: an apartment located inside a former jam factory.

Ahead of the release of his new Netflix movie, "The Whisper Man," in which he stars alongside Adam Scott and Michelle Monaghan, De Niro opened up about how he balances his home life with his career, admitting that there have been times over the years where he has struggled with "guilt" over being away from his kids.

"I don't know if there is a secret," he told People magazine about of his views on fatherhood. "It’s just managing it all. And there’s no way around not feeling a little guilty about not being there at times you should or you think you should."

Here, Realtor.com® reveals the properties where De Niro spends his time with his partner and their child—as well as the impressive dwellings he's bought and sold throughout his decadeslong career, from the Big Apple townhouse he owned for decades to the London penthouse inside an old factory.

One of the actor's most famed properties is the Montauk, NY, home he inherited from his father, artist Robert De Niro Sr.

The beach house served as a sanctuary for the late painter and was passed to his actor son after his death in 1993.

Located just a short distance from the Gurney's Montauk Resort, the property is located in one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in Montauk. All of the dwellings along the beachfront stretch sit on land that slopes toward the ocean, providing jaw-dropping views over the water.

The luxe dwelling, which was built in 1950, is situated on a 1.5-acre lot mere feet from the beach and sprawls across 2,278 square feet. The property also boasts 740 square feet of decking—and a large swimming pool that overlooks the ocean.

In 2017, the actor filed a request to have the existing property razed so that he could build a new home on the same site; however, his application was denied.

While De Niro has never made a move to list the property, other dwellings on the same exclusive stretch in Montauk have been listed for tens of millions of dollars in recent years, including an adjacent four-bedroom dwelling that is currently on the market for $22.5 million.

The New York estate that caused a property tax headache

In 1997, the actor and socialite Grace Hightower tied the knot, and they celebrated by picking up a $1.5 million home in Gardiner, NY.

The main residence on the property spans 2,222 square feet and initially came with a 78-acre parcel, however records show that De Niro has since acquired an adjacent 45-acre plot, bringing his total spread to a staggering 123 acres.

There are multiple structures on the property, including several guest dwellings in addition to the primary abode.

The actor overhauled that home—a farmhouse, which was built in the 18th century—shortly after snapping it up to include six bedrooms, seven bathrooms. He also turned a 14,000-square-foot barn into a full-blown funhouse that features a gym, a boxing room, a game room, and a small film studio.

A separate barn on the parcel was converted into offices.

As if those amenities weren't enough to keep the Hollywood star entertained, the property also features its own ski slope, as well as a tennis court.

All of those upgrades caused something of a headache for De Niro in 2010, when the trust through which he purchased the property challenged the town's $6 million assessment of his dwelling, insisting that it was worth only $4 million.

After De Niro's trust lodged its complaint, the town conducted another inspection, one that resulted in its assessment being raised to $9 million.

A lengthy legal battle then ensued—one that went on for more than three years and resulted in the actor backing down, ultimately agreeing to the original $6 million valuation of his home, according to The New York Times. His trust also agreed to cover the town's $129,000 legal fees.

"This settles the fact that we were never out to get De Niro," town board member Warren Wiegland told the outlet in 2014. "This was never about how much money anyone has, but about people paying their fair share."

De Niro's beloved New York City townhouse

For nearly 40 years, the "Taxi Driver" star spent his days at the same West Village townhouse, which he purchased in 1975 for just $190,000.

The 5,000-square-foot home was built in 1852 and comes complete with three bedrooms, sprawling ceilings, and a private terrace.

After holding the keys for 37 years, the actor eventually sold the property for $9.5 million in 2012. It then returned to the market in 2019 for the much higher price of $22.8 million, but ultimately sold for almost half that amount, securing a buyer for $11.98 million in 2021.

Property records show that the sprawling abode is currently available to rent for the sky-high sum of $75,000 a month.

It has been given an extensive makeover since De Niro owned it—however, many of its original 1852 design details remain intact.

"An authentic 1852 Italianate townhouse, meticulously restored into a passive-house sanctuary on one of the West Village's most coveted blocks," the latest listing states.

"The house includes an elevator, four terraces, and a large 58’ deep landscaped back garden.

"Restoration brought the home up to date with most rigorous modern codes, transforming it into an environmentally conscious passive house. This is a special offering on one of the best blocks in the West Village."

In 2001, the actor turned his real estate sights across the pond and picked up a $1 million London loft in a converted jam factory.

The property comes complete with two bedrooms and sprawls across 2,100 square feet. There is also a roof, which boasts panoramic views.

It's unclear when exactly the actor let go of the dwelling, however, reports indicate that he had already sold the home by the time it was publicly listed again in 2018, when it was put on the market for $2.16 million.

Upper West Side pad

In 2006, De Niro and Hightower—who share two children, son Elliot and daughter Helen—picked up a Central Park West apartment for $20.9 million.

The couple kept tight-lipped about the fifth-floor apartment until 2012, at which point the building made headlines for a dryer-induced fire that destroyed much of the 5,800-square-foot home.

The actor and his family were thankfully out of the country at the time, however, a neighbor later told CBS, “Right above my head these 12-foot-tall flames exploded out of the fifth-floor window.”

De Niro and Hightower called it quits in 2018, and the socialite then offloaded the home in March 2025 for $18 million.

Greenwich Hotel investment

The actor ventured into commercial real estate in 2008, when he opened a luxury hotel in New York City, just a short distance from where he grew up. According to The Times, De Niro teamed up with hoteliers Ira Drukier and Richard Born, as well as his son, Raphael, on the investment: an 88-room venue with its own restaurant.

De Niro then enlisted Belgian designer Axel Vervoordt and Japanese architect Tatsuro Miki to create a Japanese-inspired penthouse suite inside the property in 2014.

“Tribeca has its own ambience and feeling,” De Niro told The Hollywood Reporter. “Axel wanted to respect that and pull in elements of the city. It’s more than interior design: It is art.”

The property comes complete with 6,800 square feet, three bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, and boasts wood, stone, and reclaimed materials.

Although the unit is available for guests to rent, the actor is undoubtedly also welcome to reside at the pad whenever he pleases.

Elsewhere in the hotel, guests can enjoy a stunning underground spa, which features a stunning swimming pool and offers a myriad of treatments, or dine at Locanda Verde, where stars including Yoko Ono, Jay-Z, Bradley Cooper, Katie Holmes, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
