The actor was diagnosed with ALS in April 2025. He passed away on Feb. 19, 2026. His posthumous memoir hit shelves on Nov. 3.
Eric Dane's estranged wife, Rebecca Gayheart, has lifted the lid on the shock that came with the actor's death, revealing that she had "no idea that was it."
While speaking to NBC's Maria Shriver on Nov. 3—the same day the late Hollywood star's memoir, "My Book of Days," hit shelves—Gayheart, 55, reflected on the final moments of Dane's life.
The actor, was diagnosed with the degenerative neurological disease in April 2025 and died on the afternoon of Feb. 19, 2026. Gayheart confessed that she and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia, "never, ever anticipated" that he would pass away when he did.
“He had gone to the hospital so many times before, and they would patch him up, so to speak, and he would come home,” Gayheart explained. “And he’d be OK. And we’d go back to the normal routine, which did change week by week.”
She then recalled her estranged husband's first day in the hospital during his first trip there.

(Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic) “I said, ‘Listen, I’ll be back. I have a dinner. I’m going to this event.’ I had no idea that that was it, that that week was going to be our last week,” Gayheart revealed. “And nor did my daughters. It really took a few days for us to understand the gravity of what that last trip to the hospital meant.”
She noted that she and their daughters began to realize how bad things had become a few days into the hospital visit.
“I think it was like day three in the hospital where it shifted. Everything shifted. Just the tone of when the doctors were talking to us, and some of the information we were given," Gayheart said.
At the same time, Dane was also beginning to come to terms with his last days.
“He was fully aware it was shifting, and he was still communicating with us. Not well verbally, but I could understand him most of the time. The kids could most of the time, his closest friends," she revealed.
Meanwhile, friends of Dane and Gayheart helped her through the emotional turmoil as she struggled with "decision fatigue."
“It was figuring it out as we went, but I remember the moment Eric decided to make some choices, and he did. ... He was in control of the way he was going to leave," she said.
Because they couldn't set up their usual family sleepover at home, they brought everything they needed to the hospital to ensure they could spend Dane's final moments with him.
“The girls and I just camped out there with him, and we had our family sleepovers, and we brought in those little candles that aren’t real candles. They have batteries. And we played his favorite music, and we tried to make it as nice as you can be in the hospital room," she revealed.
Although they cherished their final moments with Dane, Gayheart revealed she wasn't prepared for how quickly the time to say goodbye came.
“A lot of people will say, ‘Well, at least you knew, and you could have those last conversations.' But we didn’t know, because there is no road map. No one can tell you what the journey looks like because it’s so different for every patient. He was becoming more alive mentally, but losing all of his physical abilities. And for the girls, that was really hard to watch as well. But overall, it’s a blur, because it was just so overwhelming," she said.
Dane was meant to meet with Shriver shortly before his death; however, they had to reschedule their plans because the actor wasn't feeling well and mere days later, Dane died.

Speaking about the book, Gayheart previously told People, she was “grateful he did, because it gives my girls the opportunity to know their dad as a human being.”
In the days leading up to his death, the family found comfort in familiar routines, eating sushi, watching movies, and gathering for game nights.
“We tried to be present through all of our fear and frustration and uncertainty. It was truly an exhausting and heartbreaking experience, but it also showed us his extraordinary strength every day, and that was really wonderful for the girls and myself to witness,” she told People.
In an excerpt previously published by the outlet, Dane recalled the devastating phone call in which he told Gayheart about his diagnosis.
“I say to Rebecca on the phone, ‘It’s what we feared.’ I don’t remember a single word I said after that,” he wrote.
Despite their separation, Dane made clear that he and Gayheart remained a family.
The “Grey’s Anatomy” actor described the news as a “violent impact,” comparing the feeling to “getting the wind knocked out of me.”
As he struggled to process the diagnosis, he recalled hearing Gayheart “wailing on the other end of the phone.”
“My sobs make my body shudder, and I hear her words pouring out amid her tears, ‘I’m here, we’ll fight this together, I’m not going anywhere,’” he wrote.
Throughout the memoir, Dane described how his daughters gave him a sense of purpose as he faced the disease.
“I’m going to show my girls how to walk through this life with grace and dignity, no matter what. I am going to FIGHT. This has become my purpose. My reason. This is now my job,” he wrote.
Dane's death was revealed in a statement by his representatives.
“He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.
"Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
Following his death, many of his celebrity friends have come forward to lay bare the actor's final moments.

While speaking on the podcast "Broad Ideas," Gayheart had opened up about the state of their relationship, insisting that she will always be there to support Dane, even though their marriage had ended.
“We’ve been separated for eight years. The kids live with me 100% of the time. There’s been lots of just stuff, other stuff,” she told hosts Rachel Bilson and Olivia Allen.
She added that it is important for her to be a "role model" for her daughters, particularly in how she treats her former spouse.
“I am definitely trying to show them that we show up for people, no matter what. He is our family. He is your father. We show up, and we try to do it with some dignity and some grace and just get through it and that we will get through it the best we can," she said.
Gayheart noted that she was staying afloat and helping her loved ones by trying to "stay optimistic."
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, according to the ALS Association.
For around 90% of cases of ALS, there is no known family history or a genetic mutation linked to ALS.
For 5% to 10% of cases, there is a family history of the disease. This is often referred to as familial ALS.
There is currently no known cure for ALS. However, there are FDA-approved medications that may help slow down the progression of the disease.
After sharing his diagnosis, Dane closely guarded many of the details of his medical battle.
According to his IMDB page, the actor had three projects that were due to be released: "Euphoria" Season 3, which premiered April 12, 2026; a 13-episode thriller called "Countdown"; and a movie called "Family Secrets."
Dane rose to stardom after appearing in ABC's hit medical drama "Grey's Anatomy," where he played the role of Dr. Mark Sloan, who was often referred to as "McSteamy."
At the time of his death, Dane was believed to be residing in a three-bedroom, three-bathroom pad that spans 2,265 square feet, which he snapped up with Gayheart in 2000 for $949,000.
