O-Town Frontman Ashley Parker Angel Opens Up About His Shocking Health Scare and Las Vegas Sanctuary

Former O-Town frontman-turned-fitness guru Ashley Parker Angel has switched up his act from singing and dancing in a boy band to performing a different type of choreographed routine—a nightly wellness ritual—inside his Las Vegas home.

The 45-year-old “All or Nothing” vocalist’s purchase of the contemporary Craftsman-style house in 2021 coincided with a conscious shift away from the decades-long career he built in entertainment to go all in on health and entrepreneurship.

“After 20 years of being a singer and actor, I had a lot of burnout, had a lot of fatigue, and there was at one point, I felt like I had outright depression,” Angel tells Realtor.com® in the latest Celebrity Sanctuary. “I had so much anxiety about where my career was going and just the stress of keeping up with that level of fame and success at a young age.”

The Redding, CA, native had been plucked from obscurity as a teenager in 2000 when he competed on ABC’s “Making the Band,” the reality TV competition series that formed O-Town. Upon the pop group’s disbandment in 2003, Angel went on to put out a solo album, star on his own MTV reality TV show, and play the leading man in more than 2,000 performances of Broadway productions “Hairspray” and “Wicked.”

To keep up with the physical demands of his gigs, Angel often collaborated with fitness coaches and nutritionists, so it came as a shock when the teen heartthrob discovered he had some heart-related problems.

“I thought I was doing everything right,” he shares. “I was eating perfectly. I was working out five to six times a week. Then I got blood work, and it was really eye-opening and actually kind of scary because I had all these cardiovascular issues and health markers that were off. It really taught me that you can look healthy on the outside, but if you're not healthy on the inside, none of that really matters.”

Angel’s treatment plan included natural supplements prescribed by cardiologist David Rizik. The successful results of the recommendation is what inspired the patient and doctor to partner as co-founders of wellness brand High Level Science, which launched its medical-grade, science-backed supplement products in GNC stores nationwide earlier this year.

While Angel’s wellness brand aims to “clear up the confusion in the supplement space” for all customers, its newest product focuses on women’s health and has given the pop star an opportunity to reconnect with female fans from his boy band days in a new and meaningful way.

“Women have always played such a huge role in my life and my career—my biggest fan, my best friend, has always been my mom,” notes the chief wellness officer. “The supplement industry has always offered more for men than they have for women, and so we're really excited to change that because we feel women deserve more in that space.

“If you’re a millennial, we're all thinking about healthy aging,” he adds. “We're all thinking about longevity in a different way than our parents and grandparents did.”

Though Angel has professionally moved on from his pop culture past, he embraces the early-2000s millennial culture he came up in with references to the era in promotions for High Level Science. His ongoing lineup of appearances at 700 GNC stores across 37 cities has been dubbed the “Making the Brand” tour. Now, decades after his boy band days, Angel asserts that hitting the road is actually less taxing than ever thanks to the healthier habits he’s adopted.

“I’m 45 and I have more energy now traveling, being on the road, staying in all these hotels than I did in my 20s because I know what to do to feel my best,” he declares.

To maintain that health regimen while traveling, Angel's most important stops on his current tour are the ones he makes at his five-bedroom, three-bathroom, 2,500-square-foot Sin City residence. In this edition of Celebrity Sanctuary, the pop icon reveals how he's staged the primary bathroom in the 2021-built abode to support a series of steps he takes to wind down each night so he can operate at a high level every day.

(Ashley Parker Angel)

I was living off and on in L.A. for about 20 years. I also lived in New York for certain chapters of that to do Broadway, but when COVID hit, I wanted to get out of being in such a big city, surrounded by so many people all the time, so I jumped in my car and I started doing weekend road trips to Vegas to be out in open spaces and I fell in love with it.

As someone who's lived in L.A. and New York, I find the restaurants in Vegas are perhaps even better than both of those cities. The entertainment options were better, and I love that I could very quickly be out in a place like Red Rock Canyon, which is so beautiful. You've [also] got [Mount] Charleston. Spending time here and really discovering the city, I [felt] an itch to buy a home, and so I pulled the trigger right around when COVID happened, and I've been here now for five years and I've loved it.

It's 2,500 square feet. It's four bedrooms with an office, so five rooms, really, and then three bathrooms, so it's a good size.

Sanctuary, to me, translates to peace of mind. I primarily work from home, so I would say my sanctuary is my bathroom where I've got this big, beautiful bathtub. I've got this big window that overlooks the mountains. A lot of people think of Vegas [as] desert, so they think it's just flat. Vegas has so many beautiful mountain ranges and canyons [and] unbelievable sunsets.

It's a very modern farmhouse, so a lot of black fixtures, black faucets, contrasted with white and a lot of brown tones as well, a lot of neutral, natural, earthy tones.

I love candles—Le Labo is my favorite—and because I get to travel the world, I always try to get a Le Labo candle. Right now, I have one that I got from Japan, which is one of my favorite places to visit. Part of my sanctuary experience is lighting that candle. My favorite scent is Santal, and it's just awesome.

That bathroom has a separate water closet with a bidet. Being someone that's traveled the world, I'm always like, “Why don’t Americans, and some of us do, but most bathrooms don’t, have a bidet?” The other parts of the world that have a bidet have really figured it out, so I've done a lot to update the bathroom.

I have some artwork up as well, and [it’s] just a place where I can completely unwind from the stresses of life.

I turn my bathroom into a home spa where I light candles. I’ve got a sound machine, so I can kind of have a sound bath. I meditate in there.

I’m addicted to Epsom salt baths. Epsom salt baths are so good for muscle recovery, and because I'm someone that works out a lot, one of the best things you can do for muscle recovery and for relaxing your mind before sleep at night is an Epsom salt, so [a] bathtub’s a big deal for me.

I’m very busy as most of us are. I don't have time to frequently just sit and meditate, but when I take an Epsom salt bath, it's [a] two-for-one productivity hack. I’m soaking my muscles, but then I do deep breath work and I meditate for 15 to 20 minutes before bed at night. It's so good for my quality of sleep.

When I say sanctuary, I don't bring my phone in there, so it's really my place to completely disconnect from email, from text messages, from technology. This is a nightly routine for me. When I'm home, I do it every night.

The consistency of being able to [look] forward to 20 minutes carved out in the bathroom where text messages are off, no email, and doing the breath work—that consistency anchors me in my daily routine because I fall asleep faster at night, and sleep, scientific studies prove, [is] going to completely reenergize your physical, mental, and emotional health. That nightly routine has totally transformed my energy and focus throughout the day.

I’m constantly trying to update the home. I'm constantly thinking of things I can do interior decorating-wise, so I would say it's still a work in progress.

I’m really looking to get an infrared dry sauna installed into the house. Heat therapy, including sauna or Epsom salt baths, are so helpful for people's recovery and sleep at night. Sleep is the foundation of everything, so it ties back to the sanctuary [and] the bathroom nightly routine. It is absolutely an anchor.
