Josh Duhamel Reveals Hollywood Warning After Selling $3.4 Million L.A. Home and Embracing Midwest Life

Josh Duhamel Reveals Hollywood Warning After Selling $3.4 Million L.A. Home and Embracing Midwest Life

The actor has revealed the warning he received from his former agency as he opens up about his life and future outside Hollywood.

Josh Duhamel has revealed how his decision to enter the testosterone business left him fearing that he could be run out of Hollywood because his fellow A-listers would "make fun" of him—while opening up about the very different life he has built away from Los Angeles.

The 53-year-old "Ransom Canyon" star recently spoke about his experience with testosterone replacement therapy, revealing that his former representatives had warned him that publicly attaching himself to the treatment could damage his image and career.

Duhamel, who co-founded men's health company Gatlan, said during an appearance on Dave Asprey's "The Human Upgrade" podcast that he initially had reservations about becoming so publicly involved with the company because of the potential response in Hollywood.

"I won't tell you the agency that I'm no longer with, but they said, 'Don't do it. It's bad for your image,'" he recalled. "And I was like, 'All right, watch.'"

Still, Duhamel admitted the warning gave him pause, particularly because of the possibility that his involvement in the company could make him a target of ridicule in the entertainment industry.

"It took me a while," he admitted, explaining that he questioned whether his representatives might have been right and whether he could be "made fun of in the town" for launching the business.

Ultimately, however, the actor decided to trust his instincts and move forward with the venture.

Duhamel revealed that his interest in testosterone therapy began after tests showed that he had low testosterone levels in his early 40s.

After researching the treatment and trying it himself, the actor said he began to notice a significant difference in how he felt physically.

"I feel better now than I did in my early to mid-30s," he said, adding that he feels stronger and has noticed improvements in his joints, back, and knees.

Duhamel said he currently injects testosterone three times a week in an effort to keep his levels consistent.

The actor also credited the treatment with giving him the energy he needs for his busy home life as a father of three.

Duhamel and his wife, Audra Mari, whom he married in September 2022, welcomed son Shepherd in January 2024. The couple announced the arrival of their daughter, Rocca de Leon Duhamel, in May 2026.

He also shares son Axl with his ex-wife, singer Fergie.

But while Duhamel may have worried about how his latest business venture would be received in Hollywood, he has already been steadily creating a life for himself far removed from the Los Angeles bubble.

In recent years, the actor and his family have established their primary residence in Fargo, ND, while also spending time at his sprawling off-grid property across the state border in Minnesota.

Duhamel has owned the remote retreat for nearly two decades, having initially purchased a 12-acre parcel after his father showed him the property.

He subsequently purchased additional land, expanding the spread to around 50 acres.

Over the years, the actor has transformed the once-rudimentary property into a much more functional family getaway—although he has intentionally maintained some of its rugged appeal.

When Duhamel first purchased the land, the setup was incredibly basic. He previously revealed that the property went without plumbing for years, forcing him and his guests to rely on outhouses and wash dishes in the lake.

Since then, he has made numerous improvements while developing the land into a retreat that also doubles as something of a survival compound.

The self-described "doomsday prepper" has equipped the property with wells and food plots, while also learning skills that could help him and his family live off the land should the need ever arise.

Duhamel has previously explained that part of his motivation comes from wanting somewhere he can retreat to if modern conveniences and infrastructure ever become unavailable.

Yet the Minnesota property is much more than an emergency escape plan for the actor.

Duhamel has repeatedly spoken about the sense of freedom he experiences there, revealing that spending time at the property allows him to disconnect from the pressures of his professional life.

His connection to the land has even crossed over into his acting career.

While appearing on "CBS Mornings," Duhamel explained that his lifestyle at the Minnesota cabin bears some similarities to that of his "Ransom Canyon" character, ranch owner Staten Kirkland.

"I have a cabin just on the other side of the border from North Dakota, in Minnesota, which is very ranchlike," he explained. "It's a cabin, it's a lot of property, a lot of land we have to take care of."

Duhamel added that he was actually at the cabin when he first spoke with "Ransom Canyon" showrunner April Blair about the series three years earlier, noting that the setting put him in the perfect frame of mind for the project.

His increasing attachment to life in the Midwest has also been reflected in his real estate moves.

In June, Duhamel listed a four-bedroom Encino, CA, home for $2.99 million, having purchased the ranch-style residence for $2.65 million in 2017.

The 3,310-square-foot property, which sits on just over a third of an acre, had served as one of his West Coast bases and featured panoramic views, a swimming pool, spa, fire pit, barbecue area, and sauna.

The actor quickly found a buyer for the property for $3.4 million.

However, the sale did not mean Duhamel was immediately cutting all ties with California.

He later clarified that he still maintains a home in the Los Angeles area because Axl attends school there. Duhamel said his family will continue splitting its time between California and the Midwest until his elder son finishes school.

The Encino property, he explained, had served as more of a transitional home following the end of his marriage to Fergie and before he began building a family with Mari. After renting it out for several years, Duhamel decided his money would be better invested in North Dakota.

For now, that means Duhamel remains connected to Hollywood both personally and professionally. But between his Fargo home, his expansive Minnesota retreat, and his decision to sell one of his California properties, the actor has made increasingly clear where he sees his future taking shape—even after once fearing that one of his most personal business decisions could leave him on the outs in Hollywood.
