Housing Week Ahead: Hottest Markets, Mortgage Rates, and Home Loan Reforms

The week ahead is light on market indicators, but will bring several exclusive new reports from the Realtor.com economics team.

The week ahead is light on market indicators, but will bring several exclusive new reports from the Realtor.com economics team.

On Monday, senior economist Jiayi Xu releases our first-ever Generational Housing Succession report. This report will examine demographic trends for the oldest Americans—the Silent Generation and baby boomers—and look at how they are going to affect the housing market in the years ahead.

On Wednesday, senior economist Joel Berner will publish a look at regulatory reforms for small mortgages under $100,000. It is the next installment of his series on how the 21st Century Road to Housing Act is likely to make a difference in the housing market.

Senior economist Hannah Jones will be covering our Weekly Housing Data release on Thursday, showing the latest trends in listing activity and prices.

Then on Friday, Hannah will publish the September Hottest Housing Markets report, showing which areas of the U.S. still have fast-selling, in-demand homes.

This marks a light week for market indicators, with the calendar limited to Freddie Mac's weekly mortgage rate average released on Thursday. Joel will have commentary on the latest move for rates, which hit a three-year high of 7.28% last week.

Mortgage rates have been on a wild ride, climbing 62 basis points in just the past five weeks, mirroring a similar reset in the Treasury market.

While late last week saw some modest easing in 10-year Treasury yields, they remain well above week-ago levels, suggesting that mortgage rates are also likely to remain well above 7% this week.

Meanwhile, this week marks the best time to buy a home in six major metro areas: Columbus, OH; Detroit; Las Vegas; Nashville, TN; Salt Lake City; and San Antonio, TX.
